Excursions to discover Tuscany

Tuscany is a wonderful region to discover. Do you like making walks in in the middle of nature, hiking or cycling? Play golf or go on a boat? Then Tuscany is the ideal destination to practice all these activities and spend time outdoors.

In this article I have put together some information to give you an idea of where is it to go.

Discover all the wonderful excursions proposed by us in the surroundings of City of Volterra; specially selected for you to make your stay even more  extraordinary.

Volterra is located in the center of Tuscany, in a location close to most important art City:

  • 1 hour from Siena;
  • 30 minutes from the sea (Cecina);
  • 1 hour from Chianti;
  • 1 hour from Florence
  • 40 minutes from Certaldo, the city of Boccaccio;
  • 1 hour from Pisa;
  • 30 minutes from San Gimignano;
  • 1 hour from Lucca;
  • 1 hour from Vinci, city of Leonardo da Vinci;
  • 1 hour and 10 minutes from Populonia, a city with Etruscan necropolises and from Massa Marittima;
  • 45 minutes from Bolgheri, famous for its fine wines and cellars;
  • 1 hour and 30 minutes from Montalcino and Montepulciano.

Itineraries for those who love art:

In an hour you can get to Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, and visit the main monuments such as the Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo with Giotto ‘s bell tower, the large square Michelangelo, the Uffizi, the church of Santa Croce and Michelangelo’s David.

I will provide you with information on times, costs, museums to see, as well as suggesting you parking lots best to leave the car.

An hour’s drive away you will also find Siena, famous for the Palio which we run in Piazza del Campo; Pisa with its leaning tower or Lucca with its beautiful ones walls medieval, also to be traveled by bike.

Alternatively, if you want to go a little way, you can visit San Gimignano with its highs medieval towers, only half an hour away by car.

Itineraries for those who love nature and the sea

Volterra is famous all over the world for its Balze: an area characterized by a clayey and sandy soil that time has transformed into a panorama incredible, with crevasses, overhangs and badlands.

You can make day trips along the various itineraries: 23 itineraries to ring for mountain biking, hiking or horseback riding to visit the various villages e the nature reserves of the Alta Val di Cecina. Ask me for the route map!

Volterra is also very close to the sea. Cecina, for example, can be reached in little more 30 minutes, but there are also many other resorts on the coast that deserve to be visit: Castiglioncello, the Gulf of Baratti, Marina di Bibbona, San Vincenzo and the gulf of Follonica.

Do not miss south of Pomarance, the Devil’s Valley: phenomena of origin volcanic they give life to the escape of vapors from the ground, sources of thermal water which they stink of sulfur and puddles of boiling mud. For km you will see the silver pipes that run through the hills to the power plants. To visit the geothermal museum to Larderello, with boraciferous shower heads and Lagoni del Sasso.

You can also visit the parks of the Val di Cornia, between nature and archeology, on the coast degli Etruschi: the archaeological park of Baratti and Populonia, the coastal park of the Sterpaia and Rimigliano with crystal clear water and unspoiled nature, Piombino e Campiglia Marittima.

Surrounded by two defensive walls, one Etruscan and the other medieval, it is one of the most important centers of the Tuscany for its monuments that testify 3000 years of ivilization and for the craftsmanship alabaster. Volterra is still not touched by the stress of contemporary life and the visitors who they come to visiting it have the immediate impression of entering in the past.

San Gimignano

Coming from anywhere, its numerous medieval towers are clearly visible, even if today
they count thirteen, it is said that in the fourteenth century there were 72 towers, at least one for each wealthy family. The amazement it continues when you pass one of the city gates and walking along the silent streets lined with old buildings.

Marina di Cecina

A few kilometers away from our accommodation facility it is possible to reach the so-called
"sea of Volterra "from Vada, passing through Bibbona and Cecina. Do not miss the vast coastal pine forests and the beautiful free beaches. For those who want to have fun, Cecina has a water park full of interesting games.

Siena

Siena has always attracted many tourists for its splendid monuments and numerous masterpieces to visit in museums. Famous, for the event most awaited by the Sienese districts, the "Palio", tradition started in 1644 and never interrupted, it takes place twice a year on July 2nd and August 16th and it is a real e own challenge between horses and jockeys of enemy districts.

Famous and ancient maritime republic, it is located a few kilometers from the Tyrrhenian coast and extends on the banks of the River Arno. Famous for the "Leaning Tower", a monument discussed and known as one of the seven wonders of the world. Provincial capital of Tuscany and archiepiscopal seat, it is today especially a city university.

This city is rich in monuments, historic buildings, galleries and museums, it expresses all the splendor of the its ancient civilization. His world famous walk, along the monuments, to the wonderful bridge Old is flanked by very characteristic goldsmith shops. Florence represents the economic center of the Tuscany whole and is its capital.

Lucca

Lucca is enclosed in its wide sixteenth-century walls, built to defend the city, who feared the expansionist thrusts of Medici policy. The walls are interrupted by 11 bulwarks and three doors of access. Today it is possible to take long walks on the walls passing through the tree-lined avenue; they offer interesting views of the city.
